The database “Soviet Modernism 1955-1991” comprises more than 650 buildings and urban planning projects which were conceived and erected in the 14 former Soviet Republics (apart from Russia) during this period. The database was compiled in the course of a three-year research project of the Architekturzentrum Wien that presented and discussed the special characteristics of Soviet building activity in the form of an exhibition, a publication and a congress.

The exhibition “Soviet Modernism 1955-1991. Unknown History” (7.11.2012 - 25.02.2013) was curated by Katharina Ritter, Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair and Alexandra Wachter. The eponymous catalogue in German and English was published by Park Books.
For researchers throughout the world and all those interested the database of Az W can now be accessed online. The search allows combined searches with full text search and the two filters “Function” and/or “Country”.

All projects are furnished with the following details: place, architect, planning institute responsible, planning and construction period, literature references. All visual material (plans, sketches, historic and contemporary photos) is accompanied by details of sources and copyright information. We are delighted by your interest and hope that your exploration of the projects provides you with stimulating information.
